HOUSTON (ICIS)–Announced Thursday, Eastman has confirmed a long-term feedstock supply agreement with Germany-based Interzero Plastics Recycling.

Interzero will provide up to 20,000 tonnes/year of hard to recycle polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste for Eastman’s planned chemical recycling facility in Port-Jerome-sur-Seine, France.

This amount equates to 12.5% of the planned input capacity of the facility, at 160,000 tonnes/year. Eastman expects to have two-thirds of the waste-plastic feedstock under definitive agreement by the end of the year.

This methanolysis-based chemical recycling facility is slated to be operational in 2025.

Also confirmed during their latest earnings call, Eastman’s initial facility in Kingsport, Tennessee should be mechanically completed at the end of the first quarter of 2023, with a processing capacity of 110,000 tonnes/year of hard to recycled PET waste.

Out of the required waste-plastic feedstock, about 75% is under contract for their Kingsport facility, in active negotiation or being procured, the company said.

Sufficient waste sorting and separating infrastructure to meet future chemical recycling needs remains a core challenge for the market, with players saying in recent months that without investment in infrastructure – particularly waste infrastructure – the market in Europe will not be able to scale.

Coupled with this, the ongoing lack of clarity over chemical recycling’s legal status continues to concern industry players, and along with access to waste, remains one of the key risk factors to industry growth.

In November 2021, ICIS launched a new mixed plastic waste pricing service covering European prices for mixed-polyolefins waste bales, reject refuse-derived fuel (RDF) bales and reject materials recovery facility (MRF) bales. Along with this, the new service covers emerging trends in the chemical and mechanical recycling markets, as well as the burn-for-energy sector.
